Outdoor Lighting Information, Loudoun County, Virginia

Leesburg, Virginia Looking East
View of Leesburg, Virginia, looking East from Thomas Mill Road

Every bright light you see (distance between 3 and 5-miles) is unshielded, needlessly broadcasting its rays over vast distances into space, depriving us of our view of the night sky, wasting enormous amounts of electrical energy and causing air pollution from coal-burning power plants.

Lights are inefficient and generate considerable waste heat, further aggravating our 'Urban Heat Island' effects and degrading our quality of life.

If we sincerely want the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to stop considering Loudoun County a non-attainment area and free up Federal funds for our use, reduce the number of hazardous "CODE RED" days, breath healthier and cooler air, make our area more attractive and safer at night and leave a better place for our children, then we must take this seriously.

And why not?? Solutions to these problems are basic, inexpensive and readily understood. And when problems are understood, people generally cooperate and solve them.

We need to update our Facilities Standards Manual and Zoning Ordinance to better serve our needs. We need to be networking and fostering cooperation with other groups and discussing 'quality lighting', safety, energy conservation and our environment whenever we can.

And when we plan, build or re-model, we can seize the opportunity to create excellent lighting plans using modern shielded fixtures that serve our needs and that our neighbors and descendents will thank us for!
