Educational Objectives

The aim of the Learning Center is to create a formal summer school educational program for both youth and adults and a tutorial program for 15-20 "residents." Learning Center activities are designed to supplement rather than compete with public school programs.

Have Land, Need Cash!

The limitation at present is cash for construction. None of the structures of Grandale Farm - neither house nor outbuildings - meet public health or group housing codes for a school or a residential care facility for more than six people. Some non-educational activity - most likely real estate development - will have to provide cash for improvements prior to implementation of a comprehensive educational program.

Types of Educational Programs Planned

• Summer school courses. Formal, accredited two-four week courses from 9am to 5 pm daily. Refreshments and packed lunch will be provided. Transportation from Frederick, Maryland and Sterling Park, Virginia will be provided by bus with intermediate pick up points.
• Tutorials for residents. Residents will be encouraged to undertake 4-H projects which utilize the resources of the farm. Instruction will consist of help on an individual basis in meeting the challenges of each project.
• Close Readings. These are short term courses for adults or youth based on the close, guided reading of a selected text.
• Chemistry in the Kitchen. This is a specific program under development to teach chemistry while teaching cooking. The program is described in more detail in this website at Chemistry in the Kitchen .
